INTRODUCTION OF TREE BOARD – JOE SLAUGHTER
Joe Slaughter addressed the council and thanked them for their time. He introduced Frankie Beers as the tree board secretary, Beryl Budd as the tree board arborist and the other two members who were not present were Zack Pace and Gwen Johnson. He said we are here to present the proclamation which is the final step. We are currently the only city that is not a certified tree city. We will follow up with an Arbor Day event. He stated that he just wanted to introduce the board and thank the council for their support. Beryl Budd addressed the council and said he would like to commend the City for following through on becoming a Tree City. He said he had just gotten back from a conference and that they now have incentives for new tree cities. Georgia Forestry will now provide the tree for the Arbor Day event. All you have to do is decide what kind of tree and where you want to plant it. He said that he had been with a fire prevention team in North Georgia. They are getting 20 to 30 new fires per day. There are 12 in the national forest covering about 20,000 acres now. There are others that cover 3, 4 and 5 acres. The large areas are difficult to control. There will be a lot of tree loss. All the southern states are having big problems. Firewise is a program that works with people on getting resources. We are having to evacuate a lot of areas. Some places in North Georgia have not had any rain in four months.
